Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter (for cooking onions)

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of Swiss cheese

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Olive oil, for grilling

Instructions

Cook the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Prepare the Patties: In a bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently, being careful not to overwork the meat. Divide the mixture into two equal patties.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet (add a bit of olive oil if necessary), increase the heat to medium-high. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place one slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.

Assemble the Patty Melts: In a separate mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise and Dijon mustard to make a quick spread. Lightly spread the mixture on one side of each slice of rye bread.

Build the Sandwiches: On the non-spread side of two slices of rye bread, layer the melted patties with cheese, then top with the caramelized onions. Place the remaining slices of rye bread (spread side up) on top to form a sandwich.

Grill the Sandwiches: In the skillet, add more olive oil if needed. Cook the sandwiches over medium heat, about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy. Press down gently with a spatula to ensure even grilling.

Serve: Once golden and crispy, remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them rest for a minute. Cut in half and serve immediately.
