3mediumapples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and cut into sticks
1cupall-purpose flour
1teaspooncinnamon
0.5teaspoonnutmeg
0.25teaspoonsalt
1cupbreadcrumbs (preferably panko for extra crunch)
2largeeggs, beaten
1tablespooncooking spray or oil for the air fryer
1cupsoft caramel candies, unwrapped
0.25cupheavy cream (or milk, for a lighter version)
Instructions
Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Peel and cut the apples into fry-shaped sticks, about 1/4 inch wide. Set aside.
In three separate bowls, place the flour mixed with cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in the first bowl. In the second bowl, beat the eggs, and in the third bowl, add the breadcrumbs.
Take each apple stick, dip it into the flour mixture, shaking off the excess. Next, dip it into the beaten eggs, and finally coat it in breadcrumbs. Make sure each stick is well-coated.
Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the breaded apple fries in a single layer in the basket, making sure they don’t overlap. You may need to do this in batches. Spray the top of the fries with a little more cooking spray.
Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for about 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the fries are golden brown and crispy.
While the apple fries are cooking, prepare the caramel dip. In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the soft caramel candies and heavy cream. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Once the apple fries are done, remove them from the air fryer and allow to cool for a minute. Serve warm with the caramel dip on the side.
Notes
For extra crunch, use panko breadcrumbs.
