Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

For the Cookie Layer:

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x9 inch baking pan.

Prepare the Brownie Layer: In a mixing bowl, combine melted butter and granulated sugar. Mix until smooth, then add in the eggs and vanilla extract, stirring until well combined.

Stir in cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix until just blended, then fold in the chocolate chips. Pour the brownie batter into the greased baking pan and spread evenly.

Prepare the Cookie Layer: In another mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract, blending well.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the butter mixture until fully combined, then fold in the chocolate chips.

Using a spoon or cookie scoop, dollop the cookie dough on top of the brownie batter. Distribute it evenly across as best as you can (it doesn’t need to cover completely).

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).

Remove the pan from the oven and allow the brookies to cool in the pan before slicing into squares.

Prep Time: 20 minutes | Total Time: 50 minutes | Servings: 16 squares
